Whether bananas are SIBO-friendly depends entirely on their ripeness and the portion size consumed. Unripe, slightly green bananas contain high amounts of resistant starch, which acts as a prebiotic. While healthy for a normal gut, this starch can ferment in the small intestine and trigger SIBO symptoms. As bananas ripen and turn yellow, this starch converts into simple sugars, which are easier to absorb. However, ripe bananas also accumulate high levels of fructans, a type of fermentable oligosaccharide (FODMAP). Therefore, during the initial elimination phase of SIBO treatment, portions of ripe bananas should be strictly limited to about one-third of a medium banana.
